Baby Black Vulture

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Everglades tree islands are major rookeries for birds. These two beautiful babies are black vultures. Carrion eaters, who scavenge for food, black vultures are the cleaning crews of the everglades. The two vultures shown here in these photos were not found in nests but, indeed, walking around under some dense bushes. Perhaps adult vultures do not use constructed bird nests high in the trees, but, build nests on the ground and protect there young from predators with there key eyes and hearing.

Everglades Tree Island

Well in this picture I just jumped off the airboat and I am about to start surveying this tree island. Doesn't it look fun. Actually its not that bad once you get passed the dense Willow Trees directly behind me. Once you hit the pond apple, Bay, and Ficus trees a little closer towards the head of the island it is not so bad. It looks more like the typical swamp in there and their is shade due to the canopy of leaves. I hope i don't run into any alligators or Water moccasins like pictured below. This is only a juvenile moccasin <> but it could still ruin someones day. I took this picture at Holyland Management area, which is located just north of the Broward, West Palm County line, on Interstate 27.

Everglades Tree Island

This particular Tree Island runs North and South and is slightly larger then 2 acres. This Tree island is composed of mainly Willow, Pond Apple, Wax Myrtle, and a few species of ferns. Not much wildlife is evident, besides insects, Blue Tailed Skinks, Green Anole, and the occational bird. The water depth of the head, which is the high point of the island, is approximately 18cm. The surrounding water level is approximately 58 cm.
